Colorado State School Board Speech

Jenny Hatch reads the speech she submitted to the state school board

This speech will be read aloud at the Nov. 10th state school board meeting!

I am disabled, but a fellow activist will be reading it for me in person.

It is already in the public record.

If the state school board bows to the pressure currently being put on it, the K - 4 Social Studies Woke Curriculum will be embedded in our elementary schools for the next six years.

Thousands of good hearted parents and professionals stepped up to create curriculum that all agreed was pro human.

All of that work is about to be derailed.

Please speak out today and make your voice heard.

Jenny Marie Hatch

Boulder FAIR Chapter Leader

Longmont Colorado

This video is mix of three speeches recently communicated to the Colorado State Board of Education.

Boulder Colorado Chapter Leader Jenny Hatch wrote an email to the State Board yesterday which will be included in this permanent comment section of the school board communications from the public.

This video was crafted to give the young detransitioned mother the opportunity to have her testimony amplified.

Two additional comments to the board last month were also included in this video and the speeches by Janelle and Joe help flesh out the issues on the long term effects of the boards decisions around the Social Studies curriculum for K - 4th grade students.

The state board will continue to hear comments from the citizenry until the November 10th state school board meeting.

Hello Colorado FAIR Members!

The process of updating the Social Studies Standards has been underway since July 2020. These standards are important to get right, as they will determine what MUST be included in all public and charter Social Studies curriculum throughout Colorado.

The Board of Education reviewed public comments earlier this year and made many applicable changes based on public sentiment that the revised Standards were not presenting a balanced view of our common history. One change was removing LGBTQ identity groups in kindergarten through third grade curriculum. In addition, language repeatedly referring to the same six identity groups was modified.

Since these newer updates have been submitted, groups and individuals continue to heavily advocate to reinstate the original version of the revised Social Studies Standards, in particular reinstating references to LGBTQ identity groups for ALL grade levels.

Fortunately, the Board of Education is still asking for and reviewing public comment before they vote on the subject during their next meeting on November 10.

FAIR is advocating for a pro-human approach to the Social Studies Standards and will continue to encourage the Board to retain the latest updated version of the Standards.

Here is a link to FAIR's official letter regarding the Standards for you to review.

We encourage you to submit your own comment in support, as well.

We've provided comments below that you can copy and paste into an email to be sent to the Colorado Board of Education, or you can choose to modify these statements with your own thoughts on the issue. Please submit your comments no later than November 9, 2022!

Subject: I Support the Most Recent Social Studies Standards Updates

I am submitting feedback to ask that the Board maintain the June 2022 changes to the Social Studies Standards. These updates better reflect a balanced and age-appropriate approach that will serve Colorado students well.

When the original standards reflected six identity groups per House Bill 1192, each group was treated as a homogeneous collection and therefore represented only in the crudest of fashion. This is why the June 2022 changes better reflect the goal of House Bill 1192: to focus on the contributions of diverse individuals in history, culture and society throughout the United States and Colorado.

By placing the focus on traits that make each individual unique such as values, beliefs, thoughts, talents and interests rather than immutable characteristics, the revised standards will avert stereotyping and viewing groups as monoliths.

Thank you for your continued goal in making sure that Colorado students have high standards of education to better themselves and Colorado.

Sincerely,

#SocialStudies #FAIRColorado #FAIR
